I’ve been rummaging through maxforlive.com again, and this time I came across two recorder devices that had only recently been released and piqued my interest. So, I thought I’d scour the repository for the best free recorders and loopers. For those interested in live looping on stage, I’ve also included a paid option which offers more flexibility than any of the free devices.

Recorder by meownoid
Recorder lets you save the last 40 seconds at any time with the press of just one button, either on the Master or on a track through routing. It only works if the Live Set has been saved, as it saves the files under Samples > Recorded. Great for quick sampling or recording of effect tails.
File Recorder by roygbiv
Set a folder to save the recorded file, set the bit depth, then press record. Alternatively, you can link Live’s transport to start and stop the recording. Great for recording live performances.
Thresho by Inara/RossfromFriends
This audio effect is a threshold triggered automatic audio recorder of up to 4 audio sources. The recording automatically stops when the audio drops below the set threshold and after a customisable decay
period. All audio sources are recorded into one file, which is timestamped and saved to your chosen folder.
EZLOOPER by GloryTune
This looper lets you record at a fixed length between one and 16 bars synced to Live’s tempo, and automatically takes over once the recording is done. You can then switch over to another tune. It features channel mutes, two faders with real dB scales, dual 3-band kill EQs, and a beat-synced effects section. Perfect for DJ-style transitions.
Retrospective Recording by Maboroshy
Works with the workflow in Session View by recording into a temp clip when the track (MIDI or audio) is armed and Live’s transport is running. You can then hit save on any of the four buttons depending on the desired clip length. Great for live performances.

One Button Live Looper by Ableton Drummer (Paid)
This paid Max for Live MIDI effect also uses the Session View workflow for one button live looping into up to 10 tracks (audio or MIDI) with one device instance alone, multiple instances are possible. Undo, clear, easy visual feedback as well as auto arming make this a fantastic choice for live performances.

lllLoop by pircus
Lets you record (or drag in) a sample of specific length, which can then be split into three different loops with their own settings for variable speed, playback direction and loop length. Great for creating abstract textures.
bve.varlooper by ithkaa
The looper can be activated manually, automatically, or upon attack detection. The audio effect changes pitch/playback speed, playback direction, loop length, and other parameters based on the settings. Great for glitchy effects.
I’d be interested to hear which one is your favourite. If I overlooked a great free Max for Live recorder or looper audio effect you think deserves sharing, let us know in the comments below.
