Fabrizio Poce is well known under his moniker J74 in the Max for Live scene and I've written about some of his devices before. While most do cost a little, they're really fantastic (check them out) and must have taken quite some time to build. He recently released the "J74 HarmoTools", a bunch of chord and scale analysing and harmonising devices. All for free.

This tool set allows you to detect, analyse and visualise chords and scales but also to harmonise (adapt) in real time any MIDI track in your Live Set to the follow the detected and selected chords and scales. It can be used within a Live set to control and filter MIDI on multiple tracks, but also in collaboration with other musicians (on other computers) using a OSC over a TCP/IP network.

Check out the Video:

In the Tool Set:

  • A chord analiser (HarmoChord J74.amxd)
  • A chord harmoniser (HarmoChordFilter J74.amxd, a MIDI filter), which automatically follows the detected chords
  • A scale analiser (HarmoGuessScale J74.amxd) / scale selector (HarmoScale J74.amxd)
  • A scale harmoniser (HarmoScaleFilter J74.amxd, a MIDI filter), which automatically follows the detected/selected scale
  • A scale to chord builder (HarmoScale2Chords J74.amxd) based on the diatonic method
  • Add-on's for network communication of chord and scale information (HarmoChordSend J74.amxd, HarmoChordRecv J74.amxd, etc.)
  • A Standalone chord analiser (both Mac and PC) which can communicate via OSC (TCP/IP) to the Max for Live tools
  • Standalone scale selector (both Mac and PC) which can communicate via OSC (TCP/IP) to the Max for Live tools
  • A simple display and note collector (HarmoDisplay J74.amxd) useful if you like to visualise and collect notes for later analysis with the Scale analiser
