Ableton Live Insider Tips: Back Up or Copy Collections to Another Computer

In this new episode of the Ableton Live Insider Tips, we’re going to look at where the files for Collections are stored, so you know what to back up or move to a another computer. Otherwise you might lose them at some point, when you might have spent a lot of time and effort on creating them.

The feature of Collections was introduced with Live 10. It lets you colour tag anything found in Live’s Browser and add it to one of seven possible collections found at the top of the Browser. This gives you quick access to your favourite presets, samples, clips and more. They’re one of the ways to create a better workflow when working with Ableton Live.

  1. Hi Madeline, this looks like a super handy tip.

Apologies if this is covered elsewhere, but do you know if the data in the Ableton Folder info also includes the newer information like Tags (and Tag groups) in the updated Live 12 browser? I’ve been curating my library recently which has taken quite a while, including using the tags to allow quick access to presets/sounds/devices. If I do this, I would be interested to know if the tags in my own collections will come over with the User Library info too?

Interested in any pointers if you have any.

    1. Yes, there’s a file called UserKeywords.txt that is created if you create your own tags or tag groups. The tagged devices will be saved in xmp-files like the Collections tags before within the Ableton Folder Info folder in a subfolder named 12. So backing up your User Library automatically backs up the tags as well.
