5 Use Cases for the New Auto Filter (+ Free Presets)

Ableton Live 12.2 (still in beta at the time of writing) introduces a bunch of new features. The most notable is the complete overhaul of the Auto Filter. It now includes five new filter types: DJ filter, Comb filter, Resampling filter, Notch + LP filter, and Vowel filter.

I’ve created five Auto Filter presets in mapped audio effect racks for each new filter type to show interesting use cases for them, which I explain in the following video. You can download the rack presets at the end of this article for free. I’ve also created a video showing you my 7 favourite new features in Live 12.2, which you can find further down as well.

New Features in Auto Filter

Alongside the new filter types, changes have been made to the filter circuits. The SVP circuit remains clean unless Drive is added, while the DFM circuit introduces internal feedback of distortion. The MS2 and PRD circuits remain unchanged.

Several enhancements have been introduced to the LFO section. New LFO shapes—Wander, Ramp Up, and Ramp Down—expand modulation possibilities. A new LFO Morph parameter allows users to transform and tilt the LFO shape, offering greater creative flexibility. The Sample & Hold (S&H) LFO shape now features a smoothing parameter, refining its modulation output.

LFO quantisation options have been improved with the addition of two modes: Step Mode, where modulation is only updated at set intervals, and S&H Mode, where modulation is updated at the beat time.

The Envelope Follower now includes a new Attack Hold feature, which ensures the envelope completes its full attack phase even when triggered by short transients. Additionally, a Mono Sidechain option has been introduced, enabling mono summing of the sidechain signal. A sidechain EQ is also now available, with the added flexibility of internal routing.

A new Drive parameter offers enhanced control over saturation, and an Output control has been added, which is particularly useful when using high Drive settings. The new Clip button employs soft clipping to keep the signal safely below 0 dB. Finally, a Dry/Wet control has been introduced for the Auto Filter, allowing for precise blending of the processed and unprocessed signals.
