Ableton have just announced the coming release of Live 10.1. The update brings a host of new features and even new devices. While looking through the list of added features, I kept shouting yes, because a lot of them are well thought out workflow improvements that make working with Live heaps easier. I will be providing videos in the next few days that look in depth at what’s new in Live. If you own a Live 10 license, you can also join the beta testing group and check out the features yourself, as well report bugs you might encounter.
New and Improved Devices
- Wavetable: now allows importing your own wavetables or samples in the oscillator section.
- Channel EQ: flexible and simple EQ with adaptive filter curves to allow best sounding results in any setting.
- Delay: combines Simple Delay and Ping Pong Delay and adds feature upgrades like an extended delay time to 5 ms, a button to enable ping pong behaviour, as well as Jump, Fade-In and Repitch (now acts like pseudo-tape) controls formerly hidden in the context menu.
New Automation Features
- Eight automation shapes are now accessible for timeline selections in the context menu.
- Easily stretch and skew automation with the added corner handles.
- Simplified curves in draw mode.
- Enter automation values with their numerical keypad with a new context menu entry.
- Easier access to clip modulation in Session View.
- Recorded automation can now be simplified with a command in the context menu.
- Live now detects curved movements inside automation and can merge multiple breakpoints into C- and S-shapes.
Other Added Features
- New shortcuts for zooming and adjusting the workspace in Live to faster switch between detailed views and big-picture editing
- Pinch zooming on compatible computers
- Resizable Arrangement Overview window
- Freezing tracks that contain sidechain routing is now possible.
- VST3 support
- Option to export single tracks and groups with return and master effects applied.
The 10.1 update of Ableton Live is free for all owners of Live 10.

This is a seriously epic—and extremely welcome—update!
MPE support?
Not as far as I know.
Any idea on a release date?
Should be very soon. I don’t know an exact date, but they’ve only been working on fixing bugs, so it can’t be long anymore.
Not to forget freeze and bounce of tracks using a side chain which is a big headache solved. The only thing else I’d like them to resolve is stability issues. I still use Live when not in the studio as a creative tool but if I’m sitting down to compose I’ve moved back to Cubase for a few reasons but stability is definitely up there,
I can’t remember the last time Live has crashed for me. I think it was an outdated Max for Live effect that caused it.
