Ableton Live Insider Tips: Move Installed Live Packs to Individual Locations

This time for the Ableton Live Insider Tips I’ve got one for you that for some reason didn’t make it into the manual. It’s not completely undocumented, but few people are aware of this feature. In Live 10 you can change the install location of individual packs, so that essentially you could have them all installed in different locations.

Obviously having them dispersed all over your various hard drives wouldn’t make much sense, but perhaps having your favourite ones installed on your computer’s hard disk and less used ones on an external drive might be useful if the former has limited space. Or you’ve just run out of space, but need to install a new Live Pack quickly for a job and have no time to clean out your drive at this time. Either way, it’s good to know this is an option if you need it.

  1. If I move a pack that was used in a previously saved Ableton project, will that project be able to find the samples without any trouble?

    1. Yes, if you use this method, they will be recognised as long as the packs are installed. It’s a good idea though to create bounces of all tracks and/or include the samples even from the Ableton packs into the project when archiving, since they might not be available in future versions.
